On the move: BACK TO SCHOOL

25. March 2011 by Palle Schmidt

Script workshop today at the Danish Film Institute, watching opening scenes from “The Godfather“, “Amadeus” and “Lost in Translation“. I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed studying film at the University. Unfortunately I fell off the study program due to bureaucractic technicalities – You had to apply for this popular course every year, and no one told me, so… No second year for me. Anyway, nice to be back in school, if only for one day.

The picture above is the opening image from “Lost In Translation”. No kidding. Here’s what the script must have looked like:

INT. HOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
We see a young girl’s BUM in closeup for no apparent reason. We stay on the image long enough for the audience to get slightly uncomfortable. Then we CUT TO:

INT: TAXI CAB – NIGHT

Etc.

Technically it’s not the opening scene, but the credit sequence. Anyway, great movie. Great bum.

What are your favorite openings? Let’s hear it!

"Brazil" is one of my all time favorite movies. And one of the best endings ever. Or rather, not…
