Compared to the shenanigans of my first night here, yesterday seemed very quiet in comparison. Did some research and location scouting in the morning, trying to get the feel of my main character’s environment – the script I’m working on at film school takes place partly on Manhattan. One place I visited was the Strand bookstore, pictured below. Thanks for the tip, Jesper!
I met with Hang Dai studio members Chris Miskiwiecz and Seth Kushner in Brooklyn and hung at at Hang Dai for a a few hours afterwards, talking Trip City and throwing story ideas around with Dean Haspiel.
At Book Court we attended a reading and talk about Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland with artist Joseph Remnant and Pekar’s wife Joyce Brabner (will post video at a later time). Below is writer/artist Derf Backderf presenting his book My Friend Dahmer, about his high school friendship with the later infamous murderer. Very interesting.
We rushed to another reading that was almost over when we got there, but I did have a chance to see photographer Seth Kushner’s Leaping Tall Buildings exhibit. The book is a coffeetable beauty full of interviews and portraits of comics creators – a must-have for anyone interested in comics!
We all had dinner in Dumbo and I headed back to Manhattan, exhausted.
