Jakob Cedergreen as drunken bully Nick |
Just re-watched this gem as an in-flight movie, and it made me want to cry. Again!
“Submarino“, a portrait of people at the very bottom of Danish society, sees director Thomas Vinterberg return to true form. Vinterberg is known abroad for “The Celebration“, “It’s All About Love” and “Dear Wendy”, but “Submarino” deserves even more praise than his International efforts.
The story of two brothers is based on the book by Jonas T. Bengtsson. Nick just got out of jail, drinks to much, gets in fights and is emotionally crippled, and his little brother, who remains nameless in the film, is a single father struggling with money problems and drug addiction. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this is far from a feel-good movie. Grainy, gritty and gut-wrenching, this film is definetely not for the faint of heart. If you have kids, parts of it are almost unwatchable. However, “Submarino” is by far the best Danish film of 2010, if not the past decade. If you’re looking to see the other side of the idyllic-postcard Denmark you’re presented with in some media, this is the film to see.
But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
