I usually do roughs on smaller paper. Print size, I guess, but the smaller the better! For this project I printed my roughs in oversize, and did a detailed sketch on a lightbox, before inking on yet another paper/board, lightbox also.
For my new book "Stiletto", I'm doing very rough sketches, still small size, and printing them out in oversize, about 20% opacity. Then I do the actual sketching directly on the printout.
I'm constantly trying to think of faster ways to tell the story. Skipping a skecth-step here and there is one way 🙂
Feel free to draw a pin-up or something else, I'll gladly post "fan-art" on this page!
Very cool! I use the method you described first. I have at times drawn that print sized rough in such detail that the finished page only took an hour to pencil and another hour or so to ink, but that mostly depends on the type of page we're talking about. Although, I ink right on my main board.
The style in Stiletto looks fantastic. If Devil's Concubine was influenced by Risso, as per that podcast from last night (great job by the way!,) then this new one definitely has a different feel. I was reading The Dark Knight Returns (Miller) last night and I see a bit of that in there, but more European… I think that makes sense!
Anyway, would be great if you post up the "fan-art". The characters are very interesting! I'll send something your way.
Think Dark Knight is still my favorite comic book, although Criminal is top of my current list. Other influences for Stiletto: Sienkiewicz, ashley Wood, Mathias Schultheiss. Some of Dave McKean's stuff.
Just listened to the podcast myself. I must say that's about the worst pitch I've ever heard. I completely forgot to say what the book was about! But thanks for your support 🙂

Awesome Palle!
So are you doing your roughs on the same page or at print size?
Also, I want to draw these characters!
