Top 10: SEVENTIES MOVIES

9. September 2011 by Palle Schmidt

When I was a kid, I thought all movies made before 1980 were crap. Boy, was I wrong! To make amends, here are 10 great films from the Seventies in no particular order:

  • “The Conversation“
  • “Deliverance“
  • “Straw Dogs“
  • “Apocalypse Now“
  • “The Godfather“
  • “Papillon“
  • “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“
  • “Taxi Driver“
  • “Dog Day Afternoon“
  • “Chinatown“

The Sixties had some really great movies too. Another post, maybe. I’ll just say: “Point Blank“, “The Chase“, “The Graduate“, “Midnight Cowboy“…

What are your favorites from the sideburn era?

    70s movies are simply better.

Nice list – two of my favorites that is not in there is Two-Lane Blacktop and All the President's Men.

Five Easy Pieces is actually lying on the table next to my tv right now 🙂 Haven't had time to watch it yet.

For me, it was the other way around: Growing up, most 70's films were great, but when I rewatched them many years later, they were actually crap. Case in point: Westworld. It scared the bejesus out of me as a kid (I had nightmares about Yul Brynner's black-clad gunslinger), but when I watched it some ten years ago, I was flabbergasted: What the hell? I thought THAT was scary?

Anyway, here are some of those I still like:

    Harold and Maude
    Alien
    A Clockwork Orange
    Duel
    Jaws
    The Warriors
    Mad Max
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
And Now for Something Completely Different
    Life of Brian
    Texas Chain Saw Massacre
    Midnight Express
    Sleuth
    Turks Fruit
    The Getaway
    All That Jazz
    The Duellists

Monty Python! I had completely forgot that was in the 70's, most of it. I have the same memory of Westworld, and the same nagging feeling it probably won't stand the test of time. Just rewatched Sleuth the other day. Still pretty good, in a theatrical kind of way..

Thanks for putting up this list. You have good taste!
