Working Methods: WALL-TO-WALL MEETINGS

1. September 2012 by Palle Schmidt

I don’t know about you, but I rarely get anything done if I only have a few hours of work time. I need time to really dig in. So having a meeting in town during the day is the a surefire way for me to NOT get anything done. My recommendation: bunch all meetings together in one day!

Yesterday afternoon I had scheduled a meeting with my script consultant. Instead of half a day of non-productive work, I arranged a morning meeting with an editor friend. And a lunch meet with a potential intern. That’s all before I headed off to a surprise party for a friend.

Ripping a whole day out like that is a luxury, but can also an envigorating experience. I tend to feel very creative and efficient on the move. Half an hour alone at a cafe is a gift I rarely give myself, and ideas come flowing freely. Because they don’t have to! The other day I jotted down ideas for a dozen blogposts while my daughter was at tennis practice. A creative sprint like that is much better better for my self confidence than most days at my desk.

Meetings are a pain, if you feel like you ought to be doing something else. I like to plaster a whole day with meetings, and keep the rest of the week free from little interruptions.
